As a Greek, I find this absurd, too. Of course it's beneficial to know Greek in order to understand the original wording in scripture or to broaden one's horizons in general... but that would never justify looking down on others or striving towards the wrong objectives, ie. learning greek because it's superior, necessary for religion etc. This behaviour is shameful.

This idea of not kneeling on Sunday being in a canon is mind-blowing. I don't think I ever saw in my country all the people not kneeling, in any church, on different occasions during the Holy Liturgy on Sunday. I also kneel in certain special moments in the Holy Liturgy to show a high respect. I even saw priests kneeling in certain moments during Holy Liturgy (like when the bread and wine transform in the Holy Body and Blood). Today (Sunday) at the Holy Liturgy, the priest asked us to kneel and he also did it praying for rain.

Thank you, Father. There are always people who want to separate the Brethren and we all know who actually is influencing them. (And it isn't God). In my Orthodox Church, we have Russians,Ukranians, Armenians Georgians, Americans, Bulgarians, Romanians and others. We all speak the national language of this European country and our service is in Church Slavonic. We all get along because of our love for Christ and it's beautiful!!!!❤☦️

Sorry but we don’t harbor resentment against the Russian people. Historically, the Russian people have been pummeled by its own political leadership, from Ivan the Terrible to Vladina Putin, millions of Russians have died at the stroke of their pen. I can’t figure out if all denominations of Christianity are valid and just different cultural or religious expressions of the gospel (different denominations teach different gospels sadly though) or if the varying theological beliefs disqualify denominations?

As a Greek Orthodox Christian Living in the western world and not in Greece this was the idea of the old immigrants. This was a reason why so many Greek, Russian, Antiochian and so on Churches were losing members on a daily and weekly attendance that led to many young people leaving the Orthodox Church and even the faith. I when I was a child from my parents would see it through their eyes as I understand that they would go to church and understand the church service. However many of us now live in English speaking countries with 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation migrants descendants the only speak and understand English! Thus we must evolve in order to bring the flock to the church and back into the right path of the Lord! As much as some and maybe not all depending on the church demographics community of the Parish and and its location, I agree that they must be bilingual..

I do not believe there was hate in St Gabriel's heart when he set fire to the banner of Lenin. Nor when he yelled at the multitudes for their idolatry. Hate is not a Christian virtue, and neither is tolerance.

When I first became Orthodox was through a Greek Orthodox Church and had English and Greek and when I went to Elder Ephraim monasteries in Florida and it was all in Greek. Didn’t start a petition demanding that the Liturgy be in English, I learned the tones and the chants in Greek, to know where we are in the service. Your soul knows…..

I'm with Coptics in Canada. They cover lots of greek, but cover liturgy in Arabic and English too.
